Tonight, we have the opportunity to move some mulch to support the needs of Matthews Presbyterian Church. Please bring work gloves, wheelbarrow, rakes, shovels, a bottle of water, and a willingness to work. Thank you for being a part of Matthews Troop 46. The weather looks clear tonight.

Welcome

Greeting Troop 46 Scouts, Parents and Leaders and welcome to the new Troop 46 newsletter, The Bugler.  The Bugler will come out in the first week of the month starting in August 2023.

It’s been a busy couple of months, and I’d like to take a minute to catch up and share what’s coming up in the next few months.

Summer Camp Review

The troop went to Camp Raven Knob for Summer Camp this year and we had some nice successes.  A special thanks to Mr. Bergen, Mr. Botzenmayer, Mr. Dilworth, and Mr. Thomas for spending the week at summer camp and providing support and leadership for our scouts.

  • 51 merit badges were completed.
  • 11 merit badges were partially completed.
  • Troop 46 (Trent) won the Raven Knob chess championship.
  • Our newer scouts completed many Tenderfoot and Second-Class rank requirements.
  • The troop enjoyed an awesome breakfast on the way home after departing camp.

July Camping – Lake James State Park Paddle to Campsite

In July, the troop travelled to Lake James State Park with a trailer full of canoes.  We stayed in some drive-in campsites on Friday night.  On Saturday morning, we had breakfast, packed up and loaded the canoes and travelled to the paddle-in campsites.  Once the campsites were set up, we worked on canoeing and lifesaving skills.  On Sunday, we broke camp, packed up and paddled back to the boat landing, loaded everything up and returned to the church.  It was a great trip!

Upcoming Events

Here is a brief overview of the next few months of activities and camping trips.

Dates

Activity / Description

August 18-20, 2023

Virginia Creeper Trail

We’ll be spending Friday and Saturday night at the Creeper Trail Campground.  This is a base camping experience, so full patrol boxes will be coming along and we’re looking forward to seeing some creativity with our meals.  We’ll travel down to Damascus, VA where we’ll pick up our bikes, get shuttled up to Whitetop Station and ride the bikes back down into Damascus.  This is always a popular trip.

September 1-4, 2023

Matthews Alive!

Matthews Alive! Is Troop 46’s primary fundraiser and we (scouts. Leaders and parents) will staff one of the game booths from Friday evening (9/1/23) until Monday evening (9/4/23).  Look for a shift signup sheet (at SignUpGenius.com) coming out soon.

September 15-17, 2023

Cold Mountain Backpacking

This will be a backpacking/hiking trip that will split into two different programs.  Program 1, an overnight trek to the summit of Cold Mountain (over 6,000 ft.) is a very strenuous trip.  Program 2 will include a waterfall day hike and a back country overnighter on the Art Loeb Trail.

October (all month)

Patch 46 Pumpkin Sale

Patch 46 is Troop 46’s other annual fundraiser and occurs all through the month of October.  This was very successful last year and we’re looking forward to it being even better this year.

October 21-22, 2023

The Great Pumpkin Stakeout

This is a new event for Troop 46.  We didn’t do a camping trip last October to make sure everyone was available to work shifts at the Pumpkin Sale.  This year we’re going to do an overnighter at the church that will include the Pack 46 AOL scouts.  We’ll arrive early afternoon on Saturday, October 21, 2023, and set up a campsite.  We’ll make dinner (with a focus on going “over the camp cooking” edge) and possibly do S’mores that the children of Pumpkin shoppers can participate in.  We’ll prepare breakfast on Sunday morning, break camp and pack up gear.

Troop 46 - Announcements and Summer Camp

Subject: Troop 46 - Announcements and Summer Camp

Hello Everyone, Some Quick Announcements and Summer Camp Updates

May Trip is to Beaver days at Camp Grimes.  All scouts are invited with no limits.   Planned activity is cheerful service helping the Camp prepare for the summer for which the scouts will get service hours.  We will also work on Rank Advancement and other Scout Skills.  Scouts newly elected in the Order of the Arrow (OA) will be able to participate in the Ordeal to become official OA members.

As this is a council event, the deadline to sign up is May 9th.  See the attached link for more detail and to sign up.

Registration Link

Swimming/Parent Meeting on June 6th.  Our meeting on June 6th will be held at the Weddington Ridge Community Swimming Pool.   All scouts are encouraged to attend as we will be performing swim tests good for Summer Camp and any other aquatic activity the troop will do.  Swim tests are good for a year.  I do highly encourage scouts going to summer camp to come and take their swim test on June 6th as there are usually several troops that don’t test beforehand which causes some delays in taking the test on arrival Sunday.  We may also be able to work on some rank requirements that require swimming.

There will be a parent meeting during this event for the scouts going to summer camp.

Medical Forms A, B & C.  Reminder that Medical Forms A, B and C are due on June 6th.  Form C needs to be filled out and signed by a doctor.    Medical Forms like swim tests and are good for a year.    If your form is dated June 2022 or earlier it will need to be updated for Summer Camp.  If your scout’s A&B is more than a year old it will need to be updated as we are required to have up to date medical forms on our weekend trips.   Tracy Story, our Health Officer will be collecting the forms in the meetings.

Summer Camp Release Form.  Camp Ravenknob has an Outdoor Programs Parental Release form that needs to be filled out and signed before the scouts arrive at summer camp.  The form is attached to this email.  If your scout is going to summer camp please fill out the form and return it to Tracy Story with the Medical Forms by June 6th.

Final Payment for Summer Camp.  Final payment for summer camp is due on May 30th.  James McLelland our Treasurer has been updating Scoutbook with all the payments he has received.  Please check your scout’s payment log to see what amount is due on May 30th if any.

Thanks

YIS
