Matthews Troop 46 - The Bugler Newsletter

Greetings from your troop leadership! Please take a moment to open and review the attached monthly newsletter, "The Bugler!". Understanding not every scout can attend every meeting and bring home information, Mr Hethcote and I are renewing our commitment to work together to make sure this newsletter goes out every month. Please also remember that we host a Blog on our website which contains all of our troop updates in a chronological listing. So, if you miss an email, you can get our updates there. You will find links inside the newsletter. Thank you for being a part of Matthews Troop 46.

Matthews Troop 46 Update

Matthews Alive Volunteer: Congratulations Troop 46! We did it. We took on a station this year that required more shifts than in the past. While it seemed a bit overwhelming at first, we stepped up and met the challenge. Many thanks to all who helped make this very important fund-raising event a success this year.
Creeper Trail Trip Signup Reminder: Signup Link Sept 20-22, we are headed to the VA Creeper Trail. This is a family friendly event. We will be biking mostly downhill on Saturday from White Top to Damascus. We will be using an outfitter. Please follow the link for more details.
Court of Honor: Sunday Sept 8 at 2pm we invite all scouts, family, and friends to our Fall Court of Honor. We will celebrate all of the scout's accomplishments to include Rank Advancements, Merit Badges, and other accolades. We would love to have all hands-on deck to enjoy this celebration. We typically serve BBQ and sides as a part of this event.
Committee Meeting: Attention Committee Members, our new meeting time will be the 2nd Thursday of each month as needed. Mr Hethcote and I are going to break the traditional all hands committee meeting into two separate meetings. The 2nd Thursday of each month, as needed, will be for the administrative discussions which I will lead. Mr Hethcote will be putting together a regular meeting for Assistant Scoutmasters to discuss programming. By breaking out into two separate meetings we hope to improve the efficiency of both meetings and decrease the time required for each adult.

Matthews Alive - HELP NEEDED

Hello Scout parents!
THANK YOU to everyone who picked up shifts for Matthews Alive this weekend!   We're almost there...
We still need a few scouts/adults to cover the following shifts.  Many shifts have only one scout signed up and we are obligated to have at least 2 youth for each shift.  Please see the availability below and consider taking an extra shift if you've already signed up, or if you haven't signed up yet, please sign up for a shift to help lighten the load for the rest of the troop. The shifts with the biggest needs are highlighted.

FRIDAY:
8pm-10pm - 2 scouts needed

SATURDAY:
2:30 - 5:00pm  -  1 scout needed
5 - 7:30 pm  -  1 scout needed
7:30 - 10:00pm  -  1 scout needed

SUNDAY
1 - 3:30pm  - 2 scouts needed
3:30 - 6:00pm - 1 scout needed
6 - 8:00pm - 1 adult needed
8 - 10:00pm  - 1 adult and 1 scout needed

MONDAY
11:30am  - 2:00pm  - 1 scout needed

This is an all-troop effort and we need everyone's participation to make this successful.
BONUS... the weather looks great for this weekend!  Not nearly as hot as it's been in the past, so working a shift should be much more comfortable this year.

Thank you to everyone for your willingness to volunteer your time to support this amazing, and growing, troop!

Troop 46 is pleased to share the signup for one of our most popular trips. Signup Link: https://forms.gle/2rvS9nF6hxASchPM7

The Virginia Creeper Trail is a recreational trail (rails to trails) located in Southwest Virginia (SWVA). The Virginia Creeper stretches 34 miles from Abingdon, Virginia down through to the lovely town of Damascus, Virginia (known as the Heart of the Virginia Creeper) along the Whitetop Laurel River and up to its highest point Whitetop Station near the NC State Line at Whitetop, Virginia.

We'll depart from Matthews Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 6:30 pm and travel to the Creeper Trail Campground (2248 Whitetop Gap Rd. Whitetop, VA 24292, 276-388-3426). We'll be camping in the Grand Central Group Campsite.

On Saturday morning, we'll travel down to Damascus, VA to pick up bikes and get shuttled to the top of the trail at Whitetop Station. We'll ride the Creeper Trail back down to Damascus, drop off our bikes and travel back up to the Creeper Trail Campground.

The cost (campsite, bikes, and food) for this trip is:
13 and over: $57.00
Under 13: $52.00
